Don’t Leave it Until the Last Minute!
All directors of Australian companies must apply for a director identification number (director ID) by the 30th November 2022.
While it might something that sits on the bottom of your to do list – don’t wait until the deadline. Get it done now.
The fastest way to apply is by using the myGovID app to log in to ABRS Online. Once you’ve logged in, you’ll need to verify your identity with information on record.
The most commonly used documents include:
- Details of the bank account where your tax refunds or payments are made and received.
- An ATO notice of assessment.
Directors who fail to apply within the time frame could face fines of up to 5,000 penalty units. Currently, penalty units are measured at $222 per unit for breaches of Australian Government Law, which means fines of up to $1.1 million may apply. There is also the consequence of possible imprisonment for up to 12 months.
You can check if a business is registered as a company with ASIC at ASIC Connect. Please note: sole traders or partnerships don’t need a director ID.
